Alnwick II 6 Jesmond Parish Church II 0
Alnwick’s final league match of the season saw them take on JPC away at Coach Lane.
They were still on a high from their Shield semi-final win the day before, but knew it was an important match to claim the league title.
Alnwick’s first goal come early on when the JPC keeper made a diving save.
This was to be a recurring feature of the game.
With the keeper scrambling on the floor deflecting shots from Brown, Robson and Mckeekin, finally the ball was pushed back by Robson for Mckeekin to slide it into the goal.
The second goal came from Brown dribbling the ball down the left to pass to Mckeekin, who slotted it into the back of the net.
All Alnwick’s numerous shots were saved by the diving keeper but short-corners kept being awarded as the ball was shielded under her.
Initially, Alnwick were unsuccessful with a deflection by S Fairbairn being stopped on the line, but success came when Young stopped the ball outside the D and took it in for Sparrow to lift it into the goal.
Two of the JPC players made dangerous runs towards goal when they broke, but the solid footwork of Taylor in goal cleared the ball with ease.
Two further goals, one from Robson who was always well-positioned on the penalty spot, lifted a saved shot over the keeper and the other from McKeekin to make her hat-trick.
A swap of sides into the strong wind did slow Alnwick a little but E Straker managed to battle down the right side, getting some great balls crossed into the D.
JPC enjoyed a few breaks but Frew, E Fairbairn and Nixon held a strong defensive line.
Alnwick had one more charge at goal, with JPC’s defence having to reach for the ball as it approached the goal just touching it in for an own-goal, which pushed Alnwick to 6-0.
JPC were unable to match the skill, teamwork and endurance that Alnwick showed. An excellent winning weekend from a side who, after winning 11 games, drawing one and having no defeats, are well worthy of their league-winning status.
