Warenford back to winning ways

Johnnie Johnson Housing Alnwick and District Cricket League Round-up

CHAMPIONS Warenford shrugged off their surprise opening day home defeat to Mitford with a well-timed five-wicket win at Warkworth on Saturday in the Johnnie Johnson Housing Alnwick and District League.

Warkworth batted first and set the visitors a target of 197 from their 50 overs after useful contributions from Richard Davison (40), Mark Robson (35) and Adam Jobson (32).

The visitors proved up to the task with Brian Thompson (83 not out) and Kevin Thompson (52) steering them to victory in the 42nd over.

Opener Paul Carss with an unbeaten 83 in a total of 191 for eight provided the platform for Embleton’s 63-run away victory over Alnmouth and Lesbury at The Wicket, aided by good bowling performances from Hedley Grey (5-66) and John Wilkin (3-33).

Elsewhere, runs were in short supply. Rock were skittled for 26 against Wooler, who strolled to an eight-wicket win, and Berwick could only manage 52 in reply to Tillside’s modest total of 70. The remaining fixture between Mitford and Howick was abandoned due to rain.
