Alnwick 19 Acklam 5
Durham/Northumberland Division One
Alnwick extended their lead at the top of the table at the weekend as their home clash against Acklam was one of only two matches to go ahead.
The Northumbrians took advantage of the weather-hit fixture list to stretch out the gap at the summit to 12 points over nearest rivals Guisborough, who have played one game fewer.
Alnwick’s 17th win of the season, which has seen them lose just twice, was not an easy victory as Acklam played with confidence throughout the game and made the home side work hard.
Defensively Ackam were strong across the park and at the interval the score was tied at an unconverted try apiece.
However, after the break, Alnwick managed to score 14 unanswered points including a penalty try for a scrummage infringement, which the opposition claimed was debatable as no prior warnings were given by the referee.
This weekend, Alnwick are in for a tough encounter as they travel to second-placed Guisborough for a table-topping clash.
Both sides have only lost once in their last four games, in both cases to a resurgent Horden team, who currently have the longest victory streak in the league.
