Tough start for Seconds in their new league

Alnwick Ladies II 1 Newcastle Uni IV 4

Alnwick Seconds kicked off their season on Saturday following promotion success last year.

Newcastle Uni IVs were to get their first taste of life in a higher league and the Alnwick girls came out strongly from the push-back.

In the midfield, Reed linked well with Broom and Brown, creating width to send the ball up the wings to McMeekin and E Straker, who provided some lovely crosses into the D.

After a dominating passage of play, Alnwick were caught off-guard and a quick break from Newcastle saw them 0-1 down.

Alnwick gathered their thoughts and once again made light work of moving the ball up the pitch high into the Newcastle half, with excellent play from Lincoln and Gray.

Lincoln found herself at the top of the D, where she slipped the ball across to Brown who fired it in to level the score (1-1).

Alnwick were then once again caught by an easy break from Newcastle, who, despite a gallant effort by keeper Linzi Taylor, were able to edge ahead (1-2).

The next stage saw Alnwick defending hard with Leanne Taylor, J Straker and Fairbairn fighting to keep the ball away from the goal.

An unlucky deflection off an Alnwick stick saw the ball cross the line to take Newcastle 1-3 ahead.

Alnwick made a change, with Aynsley coming on for her debut and she gave a fine performance.

An error in the D saw Alnwick give away a short-corner chance to Newcastle, who were able to extend their lead before the final whistle (1-4).

It was a tough start for Alnwick in this new league, but they showed good potential for the season ahead.
