Alnmouth & Lesbury (162-6) v Benwell & Walbottle (161-9)

Benwell and Walbottle were the visitors to Alnmouth and Lesbury this week on a blustery but dry afternoon.

Batting first the visitors were soon in trouble when three early wickets were taken by Nick Denton and Ben Oliver.

However, Hassan Raza and Stephen Reed put together a useful partnership to take the score into the 80s before Robin Tudor dismissed Reed for 35.

Two wickets for Paul Straker in two balls kept the pressure on, but Raza, was taking advantage of the excellent batting track and fast outfield to complete a fluent 50.

Immediately after the drinks break, however, he misjudged a drive and was caught and bowled by Straker.

The tail-enders then frustrated the Alnmouth bowlers as the visitors batted out their overs and ended on 161-9.

Straker was the pick of the bowlers with three for 26 whilst Oliver and Tudor finished with two wickets each.

Callum Batey showed he has a safe pair of hands with three well-judged catches.

Ian Pearson and Paul Straker opened the Alnmouth innings and made a solid start putting on 45 before Straker was caught for 21.

Once Pearson was dismissed only three runs later for 25, Benwell and Walbottle sensed they may have an opportunity.

Three more quick wickets, including captain Tom Vickers, left Alnmouth rocking at 81-5 and the game in the balance,

However, enter the two Jonnies (Ridley and Denton) to show their battling qualities and feature in a partnership of 60 to take the home team close to victory.

When Denton was out for 25, Ben Oliver came to the crease and with two quick boundaries the job was done.

Seventeen-year-old Ridley finished with an excellent 39 not out from 55 balls and batted with style and maturity.

This was Alnmouth’s third win in four league games in their first season in Division A2 of the Northumberland and Tyneside Senior League.

Next up it’s a trip to Seaton Burn.
