Team CHR (Cheviot Hill Riders)
Saving the best until last, after a busy season of racing the final big event for Team CHR were the Northern Champs downhill race and NDH Enduro, which were held over the same weekend at Kidland and Alwinton near Rothbury.
The team came away with their best set of results of the season.
Saturday was Northern Championships downhill day at Kidland on the relatively short but nonetheless technical, steep and fun track, which meant a short uplift and plenty of practice for the racers.
The result of the day here had to be James Purvis, who not only won the youth category but posted the fastest time of the day overall, beating all the experts and elites in the process.
Also coming away with the title of Northern Champ in the Junior category was Joe Mallen, a result that should secure him a place in Expert next season.
Rounding off a great day’s racing for the team were podiums for Steven Turnbull (with a crash), Dan Butterfield and Alan Turnbull.
Results and positions – Expert: 33 Steven Turnbull, 1.43.995. Youth: 1 James Purvis 1.33.424; 2 Dan Butterfield 1.53.850. Junior: 1 Joe Mallen 1.56.372. Senior: Bob Ellison 13, 2.23.008. Veterans: 3 Alan Turnbull 2.06.858; 5 Davis Gregory 2.22.979; 6 Brian Donkin 3.03.834.
Sunday was Enduro day, with three stages to race, two at the Alwinton side of hill and one on Kidland, which took in 90 per cent of the previous day’s downhill track.
Again the CHR riders prevailed, coming away with some great results in the muddy conditions on what had to be the steepest and most technical Enduro race of the season.
And once again, it was James Purvis who emerged with victory in the 14-eight years and fastest time of the day. Other podiums for the team went to James Knowles and Michael Strangeways, who both finished second in their categories and also scored top 10 overall.
Results: 14-18 year: 1 James Purvis 9m 59s.488. Seniors: 2 James Knowles 10.38.067; 5 Bob Ellison 11.45.678. Veterans: 2 Michael Strangeways 11.21.384; 6 Brian Donkin 16.57.153.
