It’s not quite the Ashes, but this Sunday the England versus Australia rivalry comes to north Northumberland, when Bamburgh Castle Cricket Club takes on Aussie side, the Macquarie Cricket Club.
The fixture comes on the back of a game between the coastal outfit and Aussie touring team, the Mudgee Cricket Club, four years ago which resulted in a draw.
And now, the Aussies are coming back – with an even stronger team.
This time, its the turn of New South Wales State University’s Macquarie Cricket Club, who are over in England to support Australia during the current Ashes series.
The university is known for its sporting prowess.
The match starts at 2pm with a barbecue for the public sourced from match sponsors, Carters the Butchers of Bamburgh, and a bar from Bamburgh’s Castle Inn.
The previous fixture received wide press and TV coverage in Australia and so, another challenge was issued.
Last time round, the Aussie side, known as the Old Ports, recreated their tradition of starting the match with a glass of port and toast.
