ALNWICK Harriers had a successful weekend at both the North Eastern Counties Cross Country Championships and the North Eastern Counties Indoor Championships, bringing back a total haul of 11 medals.

Re-scheduled following last month’s heavy snowfall, this weekend’s cross country championship competition at Temple Park, South Shields, took place in slightly more forgiving conditions.

The U13 Boys’ race kicked off the competition and a sterling run from the talented 12-year-old Adam Weightman saw him lead the rest of the field home, to earn the coveted title of U13 Boys’ North Eastern Counties Cross Country Champion. An excellent performance from Adam Shafiq saw him finishing seventh; and a solid run from Daniel Mallen, backed up by Joseph Dobbins and Joe Beeby brought the U13 Boys’ team home in third place.

Unfortunately, Alnwick was unable to muster either an U13 or U15 Girls’ team, but there were still notable performances from sisters Rosie and Molly Murton; both finishing in the first half of the field in their respective races.

Alnwick’s U15 Boys also enjoyed moderate success. Led home by Connor Weightman in ninth place, the U15s finished as fourth team.

At Gateshead’s Indoor Stadium, Alnwick’s 12-year-old Alexander Tait marked himself as one to watch in the future at the North Eastern Counties Indoor Championships, when he came away with three gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze.

The gifted ‘multi-eventer’ took convincing wins in his high jump, long jump and hurdles competitions.

He then went on to take silver in the 60m and bronze in the shot putt. His personal best performances in the long jump, 60m and 60m hurdles earned him grade four standards in all.

Moving up to the U15 category this year, 12-year-old Peter Skirrow equalled his personal best of 1m 40cm in the high jump, to take bronze. He then went on to set new personal bests in the long jump and triple jump, to earn a further two bronze medals; and in the 60m hurdles, a photo finish saw him going one better with silver.

Alnwick Harriers’ next competition is Gateshead’s Indoor Series on Thursday, January 20.
