Storming victory

FRIENDLY: Bamburgh Castle v St George’s Rovers

Defying the storms, Bamburgh continued their recent good form by defeating St George’s Rovers by four wickets at the Castle Field on Sunday.

Rovers won the toss and decided to bat and were soon in trouble with Johnny Roxburgh ripping through the top order of the batting.

He clean-bowled the first five batsmen who fell in the first six overs that he bowled.

With the score on 40-5 the St George’s batsmen began to dig in, anchored by Andy Littlefair and, with the tail wagging a little, Rovers were eventually bowled out in the final over with the total on 145.

Littlefair top-scored on 33 not out and the wicket-takers for the Castle side were Roxburgh with 5-12, Alex Davies 1-21, Tom Woodburn 2-34 and George Shiel 2-14.

When Bamburgh batted, the innings revolved around a stubborn George Shiel, who refused to give away his wicket and batted throughout the innings, making 49 not out to win the match for the Seasiders.

Shiel was ably assisted by Rory Gibson with a hard-hitting 37 and Bamburgh squeezed across the line, winning the match with four balls to spare against a vastly experienced St George’s side.

Bamburgh Castle 146-6 St George’s Rovers 145 all out.
