Stiff breeze puts brakes on fast times

SENIOR Alnwick Harriers travelled to Temple Park at South Shields, to enter the Sherman Cup and Davison Shield within the North East Harrier Cross Country League.

The event was hosted by Jarrow and Hebburn AC.

Bright sunshine on a soft ground provided a perfect day for cross-country running. But a strong, southerly wind made competing a little harder.

The Harriers produced a team of runners for the single mass start in the multi-lap circuit over a six-mile distance.

Jim Lillico came home first for Alnwick in 37:16 in a well-improved time over last year’s race. In second place was Richard Agan in 37:45, closely followed by Mike Telfer.

These three runners took the points for the club in the Sherman Cup. The overall cup winners out of the 25 clubs entering were Gateshead Harriers.

Of the Ladies team entering the Davison Shield, first home for Alnwick over two laps was Sam Embleton entering her first cross-country event and impressing her team-mates in a time of 30:28.

Next to complete the course was Daisy Whincup again in her first event in a time of 32:06, followed by Sue Skirrow in 33:48 and Claire Gillingham in 35:58. Overall Shield winners were Morpeth Harriers.

Note: Alnwick Harriers will host their own North East Harrier League fixture in Alnwick Pastures on March 3, 2012.

More information will be made available nearer the date in the Northumberland Gazette and on the club website.
