WINNER: John Straughan – Cycling
PEDAL power proved priceless for determined John Straughan who tackled a monster 750-mile-long endurance bike ride in 2011.
John, 54, completed the epic journey, from Paris to Brest and then back to the French capital, in 85 hours.
He crossed the finish line five hours quicker than the allotted 90-hour time-limit for the long-distance challenge, which is held every four years.
But despite the feat, John, from Alnwick, was stunned to receive the Senior Achievement gong.
“I am very surprised. I have never won anything like this before,” he said.
“It is a great honour.”
The Breeze Bike Club member tackled the course alongside thousands of other riders. And while he has been cycling for as long as he can remember, he described this particular challenge as ‘something special’.
“I had never done anything like that before but I thought I’d give it a go,” he added.
“After I finished I said ‘never again’ but I would do it again.”
