WINNER: Albert Straughan - Football

FORMER Alnwick Town Football Club manager Albert Straughan scored Coach of the Year for the part he played in helping to revive the fortunes of the St James’ Park outfit, culminating in a return to the Northern League.

He worked tirelessly for the club both on and off the field and had success in 2009 and 2010, including winning the Northumberland Senior Bowl.

But it was in 2011 where Albert achieved his greatest feat when the team went on a 21-game unbeaten run – not losing a league game until March – and clinching promotion back to the Northern League.

This was a triumph for him, having been involved with the club for over 25 years.

Albert, from Alnwick, said: “I’m surprised. But a lot of people achieved this award, so it is for everybody who was involved.”

Category sponsor: Alnorthumbria Veterinary Group.

Shortlisted candidates: Denise Drummond (Duchess’s High School Netball); Clare Hiscock (Alnwick Badminton Club).
