BERWICK LADIES 0
ALNWICK LADIES 7
Alnwick set off to Berwick for an afternoon away game, a local Derby. The team were raring to go after their previous weeks victory against Richmond 4.3.
Within the first 10 minutes of the game the first two goals were scored, both from penalty corners- the first by a powerful sweep from Murray and the other by a fantastic deflection from Horn.
Berwick had some quick breaks but were unable to create a goal. Another attacking run of play led by Richardson, switching the ball through Graham up to Murray, and Horn on the left, gave goalscorer Horn another successful chance on goal.
This followed immediately by an attack from the midfield of Young and Allen finding Cook at top “D” to fire another ball into the back of the net.
At half time Alnwick were feeling comfortable leading 4-0 but after previous games changes in the wind were not to be complacent.
The second half saw Berwick’s attack getting some more quick breaks but they were not getting through the strong defence of Payne, Graham, Richardson and goalkeeper Lapham.
Pettifer and Cannon were creating a lot of chances in the attacking half but not all of them were going their way.
Ten minutes into the second half and Pettifer had a run of luck, working her handy one-twos with Cannon, allowed Pettifer to twist around two defenders and place it perfectly past the keeper.
Alnwick kept this attacking play and they were awarded a penalty corner.
From this Murray managed to claim her second goal of the game from the same marvellous angle, sweeping the ball past the keeper’s right foot.
Minutes before the end of the game another penalty corner was awarded to Alnwick, which after some clumsy work from the Berwick defence, allowed Allen her debut goal of the season!
Player of the match - Suzanne Horn.
This was a well deserved win for the girls against newly-promoted opposition.
