WINNER: Ian Simon – Triathlon

LOCAL sporting stars and volunteers were honoured at the Alnwick and District Sports Council Annual Awards Night.

The prestigious ceremony took place at Alnwick Playhouse on Saturday evening.

Ian Simon was named Senior Male of the Year at the event.

As he turned 40, Ian competed in triathlons for the first time as a veteran – and what a year he had.

Targeting the standard distances of 1500m swim, 40K bike and 10K run, he emerged as top veteran in The North East Region Grand Prix and third place in the British National Ranking for his age group. He also became the North East Region’s middle distance triathlon champion at the Cleveland Steelman race.

The Alnwick Tri Club member also impressed on the global stage. Ian, from Amble, won his age group in the British qualifying race, which lead to a trip to Hungary for the Budapest ITU Aquathlon World Championships and the Triathlon ITU World Championship Grand Final Budapest.

First up was the Aquathlon, where Ian gained an impressive ninth-place finish in his age group.

He followed this up by finishing 13th in his age group in the triathlon, a tremendous achievement in a strong, world-class field.

Describing the season as ‘awesome’, Ian said: “I felt really strong going into the season and it was a really nice, consistent season and there were some really pleasing results.”

This year, Ian wants to go ‘longer’ and is aiming to run his first Ironman event, with a sub 10-hour time in mind.

He has also applied to represent the British team at the ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships in November.

Ian won the Senior Male award for the second year in a row.
