WINNER: Laura Weightman – Athletics

LOCAL sporting stars and volunteers were honoured at the Alnwick and District Sports Council Annual Awards Night.

The prestigious ceremony took place at Alnwick Playhouse on Saturday evening.

Laura Weightman was named Senior Female of the Year at the event.

Lesbury lass Laura described 2010 as the ‘perfect year’.

The middle-distance star took the 1500m by storm, finishing the season with a personal best (PB) of 4.09.60, ranking her as the UK’s fourth fastest 1500m U20 female runner of all time.

In a year of 1500m highlights, Laura finished sixth in the finals of the IAAF World Junior Championships.

Impressing over that distance in the U20s athletics age group, she won the national title and topped the national rankings at the end of 2010, as well as making significant steps in the senior ranks.

Her achievements weren’t confined to 1500m either, as she set a new PB in the 800m.

“It was the perfect year. At the end of 2009, I made a list of all the things I wanted to achieve in 2010 and I ticked them all off,” reflected Laura.

The 19-year-old, who is coached by Steve Cram, was delighted to win the Senior Female accolade.

“It is nice to be recognised for your achievements and it makes you want to go on next year and improve again.”

Laura, who also scooped the Excellent Achievement Award by On Camp With Kelly and Aviva, as well as the UKA Heroes Hero Award at the end of last year, has set herself a number of goals for 2011, including more PBs and a place on the European U23s team.
