Seaton Burn II (178-9) v Alnwick II (179-3)
Northumberland & Tyneside Senior Cricket League, Division B2
After two defeats in a row, Alnwick Seconds recorded a convincing seven-wicket win at Seaton Burn on Saturday.
Alnwick decided to bowl on a green surface, and the opening pair of Chris Woods, playing in his first game since the opening day of the season, and Ollie Holst, kept run-scoring to a minimum.
Woods clean-bowled Whetzel, before the introduction of Andrew Barker (1-50) led to the dismissal of Anderson lbw.
Captain Andrew Stewart introduced himself into the attack and, despite the increasing run-rate, a youthful Alnwick remained sharp in the field.
D Carr (45) and R Carr’s (52) partnership approached the century-mark, but Stewart (4-42) removed both within the space of two overs as he finished with four wickets.
Woods (3-25) claimed two more wickets late on as Seaton Burn posted a challenging total of 178.
Pete Matthewson and Woods set about the Alnwick reply in positive fashion with the latter smashing a big six, before departing for 18.
The dismissal of Tom Woodurn, who made a solid 14, led to Stewart joining Matthewson.
The experienced duo punished the loose delivery, but remained respectful of an inconsistent pitch.
Matthewson hit seven fours on his way to 78 before being dismissed just four shy of the winning total.
Stewart also passed his half-century to complete an impressive all-round performance as Alnwick cantered home with nearly five overs to spare.
A mix of youth and experience delivered Alnwick’s fifth league win of the season and they will be hoping to maintain renewed momentum when hosting Morpeth on Saturday.
Alnwick beat Seaton Burn by seven wickets.
