Seconds agonisingly close to victory

Swalwell (192) v Alnwick II (185)

Alnwick II squandered a great opportunity to beat Swalwell on Saturday as they fell agonisingly short in another closely-fought contest.

After asking the visitors to bat first, Alnwick looked set to chase a mammoth score well in excess of 230, but a spirited recovery from the youthful hosts saw them dismiss an experienced Swalwell outfit for 192 in the final over. Alnwick looked well set in reply at 120-2, but fell just seven shy on 185.

With the ball Alnwick started brightly as Chris Woods removed Neven in the third over, and Andrew Wright dismissed Armstrong thanks to a catch by Nick Goulden.

From 20-2, Swalwell staged a recovery with Shotton and Clarke each scoring 35, but Alnwick still kept run scoring slow.

The game was in the balance until the arrival of Swalwell captain Simon Clarke, who immediately smashed the ball to all parts in a better than a-run-a-ball 33.

Andrew Stewart removed Clarke, and then a mini-collapse saw Alnwick right back in the game, and captain Stewart end with 5-48.

With Alnwick set 193 to win, Robbie Green and Allen Thompson began brightly. Green departed for a cameo 27, but Woods joined Thompson and immediately caught up the veteran with a number of aggressive strokes to the boundary.

Thompson fell for 23, but Stewart too scored quickly from the off as Alnwick passed 100 in free-flowing mode.

The dismissal of Woods for a fluent 48 saw Alnwick to 131-3, but Michael Bateman departed to the very next delivery.

Max Harrison again batted solidly for 25, but once he fell, Stewart was left with a difficult task of batting with the tail and the home side fell seven shy.
