Blaydon put Alnwick to the sword

BLAYDON 64ALNWICK RFC 24Blaydon will be a difficult team to beat at Crow Trees as they have their sights set high yet again, intent on promotion.

A narrow 33-31 defeat the previous week at Blackburn would see them determined to post a win against visitors Alnwick.

Blaydon started well and took the lead after only three minutes with an unconverted try by hooker Pyle and on 10 minutes, a series of wild passes each, incredibly, found their man and allowed Marshall to make it 10-0.

Alnwick now began to get into the game and a decent period of pressure ensued, with the game being played in the Blaydon half. Great driving by the visitors saw Gothorp take the ball to within metres of the line. Clever play by Callum Burn earned Alnwick a 5m lineout with a successful catch and drive, Michie claiming the touchdown, converted for 10-7.

An uncharacteristic knock-on from the restart kick by Southeran allowed the lively Obonna to carve his way through the visitor defence to maintain Blaydon’s lead on 25 minutes at15-7. This lead was increased to 15 points with scrum half Taylor going over for a converted try, 22-7 before Alnwick again replied with replacement Oliver capitalising on a very controlled move to score an unconverted try.

At 22-12 at half time, the visitors would not be too unhappy and with replacements Hamilton and Mallaburn on the field, a good spell followed the restart with Alnwick patiently going through the phases. However, when Blaydon did get going with ball in hand they looked dangerous and second row Lockwood increased the lead to 29-12 after 55 minutes.

Todd for Alnwick then replicated Blaydon’s quick penalty to put his forwards on the front foot to go over and make it 29-19.

This was to be as close as Alnwick got as Blaydon now turned on the gas and racked up a further 35 points with seven converted tries.

Courty salvaged a little pride and a bonus point going over for yet another forwards try.

On Saturday, Morpeth are the visitors (KO 3pm).
