VICTORIES were on the cards for Warkworth and Tillside in the Northumberland Cricket League, Premier Division on Saturday, May 14.

But rain proved to be the winner in Alnmouth & Lesbury’s top tier clash with Berwick, as the weather forced the match to be abandoned.

A five-wicket haul from Matthew McCreath and four wickets from Cameron McGregor came to Tillside’s rescue as they beat Blagdon Park by 25 runs.

In what was a low-scoring affair, Tillside batted first and were dismissed for 105, with 35 of these extras. In fact, the extras column proved to be Tillside’s top scorer, with McGregor leading the way with the bat with 23.

Graeme Gaff (5-30) was the pick of the Park bowlers but Mike Ford (2-19) and S Oxley (3-31) also struck.

But Park were unable to post a winning reply and were all out for 80. McCreath (5-20) and McGregor (4-26) were the hitmen for Tillside while Stuart Wright (1-15) also took a wicket.

Warkworth took the honours in their match against Clara Vale, winning by eight wickets.

Clara Vale closed on 241-5, with Shahzad Alvi 51 not out, while Chris Younger (2-74), Adam Hall (1-52), Adam Purvis (1-52) and Doug Potts (1-35) took the wickets for Warkworth.

But impressive knocks from Stephen Dargue (80 not out) and Daniel Younger (74), as well as 52 extras, saw Warkworth to victory, with a successful run chase of 245-2.

Rain stopped play in the north Northumberland derby between Alnmouth & Lesbury and Berwick.

Scott Middlemist (87) and Martin Golightly (83) had helped Berwick post 239-6 off their 50 overs – with Ian Pearson taking three wickets for Alnmouth – but the rain brought a premature end to proceedings with Alnmouth 64-0, with Tom Vickers and Pearson not out on 45 and 14 respectively.

Victory was on the cards for Stobswood Welfare in Division One as they beat Whitley Bay by seven wickets. Bay were all out for 162, with R Watson (3-17), P Pattison (3-52), I Watson (2-29) and M Beverley (1-55) all taking wickets before Welfare crossed the victory line with a reply of 165-3, including unbeaten knocks from R Marshall (27) and S Townsley (29).

David Moore grabbed a five-wicket haul and Darrell Campbell smashed 64 for Ulgham Village in their Division One clash against Gateshead Ethnic Minorities (GEM), but it was not enough as GEM triumphed by 23 runs. Batting first, GEM were all out for 173 with opener Mohsin Khan leading the way with 50.

Moore (5-39) was the most destructive with the ball while Campbell and Chris Herne, who both ended with figures of 2-42, and Roy Haygarth (1-37) all struck.

But despite Campbell’s impressive knock, Ulgham fell short in their run chase, ending on 150-9 off their 50 overs.

Ammar Khalil was the leading wicket-taker for GEM, taking three wickets.

Dale Townsley put in a dominant performance for Stobswood Welfare seconds to help guide his side to a 15-run victory over New Hartley Village seconds.

Townsley hit an unbeaten 85 as Welfare finished on 172-1 – helped by J Robson (55 not out) and K Dullaghan (24) – before he took 4-41 as the Village were dismissed for 157. G Rodgerson (2-49) and Simon Urwin (1-22) also got in among the wickets.

Ulgham Village seconds match against Hebburn seconds was also settled by a 15-run margin, with the latter taking the honours.

Batting first, Hebburn closed on 188-7. Brian McVittie lead the way for Hebburn with a knock of 50, before he was dismissed by Peter Donkin, who was the pick of the Ulgham bowlers with 3-24.

In reply, Mark Skinner fell one short of his half-century, trapped lbw by Harry Graves junior for 49, while Michael Brown was unbeaten on 33, but it was just not enough as Ulgham fell short on 173-7.

McVittie (3-45) was Hebburn’s leading wicket-taker.
