Poor fielding display lets down Alnwick’s challenge

Alnwick I (151 all out) v Whickham (187 all out)

An inept fielding display when at least half a dozen catches were missed resulted in Alnwick losing a game that they should have been capable of winning.

The visiting professional, South African Matt Parr, returned very good figures of 5 for 31, which together with Armstrong, 46, McIntyre, 41 and Ruddick, 30, who all benefitted from chances squandered, proved too much for the home side.

As in previous games Michael Threlfall, with 40, was the mainstay of the home side’s reply and a spirited knock by Rob Woods, 34, kept Alnwick within reach of the required total. However, with their dismissals, the inevitable result occurred.

Alnwick won the toss and invited Whickham to take first knock, Armstrong the aggressive opener, while Davidson had added only 13 when he was bowled by Guy.

Parr joined Armstrong and Roxburgh was immediately replaced by Scott who caused Parr difficulty with his slower pace.

They managed to take the score to 62 when Wright trapped Parr lbw. Armstrong, McIntyre and Ruddick continued to add priceless runs aided by the mistakes in the field.

The Alnwick reply started promisingly as Brewis and Ayre cautiously built an opening partnership of 27 before Parr had Ayre caught at the wicket.

Brewis followed, bowled eight runs later, and Guy was trapped lbw, both by Parr.

Threlfall and Scott began the rebuilding process and did not appear to be in any difficulty, adding 44 when Scott was lbw for 18.

Graham and Stewart departed, leaving Alnwick 99 for 6.

With Threlfall still in, hopes of victory were still high but Parr returned and, to the disappointment of the home side, captured the wicket of Threlfall with his first ball.

Skipper Woods then began an assault on the bowling which raised the home side’s hopes but Parr bowled Woods for a battling 34 short of the required 37 runs.

Never has the old saying that catches win matches been more apt, which hopefully will mean a return to the basics.

Whickham won by 36 runs. Whickham earned 20pts and Alnwick eight.
