Players fly the flag

THE search is on for players to fly the flag for Northumberland in the grand final of the North East and Cumbria Junior Golf Tour.

A team from the county will compete against players from the junior tours in Durham and Cumbria to decide northern bragging rights.

Entries are now open for the 2012 Northumberland Junior Tour, with the leading players from the Order of Merit going forward to represent the county in the final.

The Order of Merit is based on four nine-hole qualifying events in Northumberland during the summer and is aimed at children between the ages of seven and 12 on January 1, 2012. It is open to players without a handicap and those with a handicap of 18 or more.

Jason Budd, regional development officer for England Golf, said: “The Junior Golf Tour is a developmental tour for juniors to progress along their golfing pathway.

“We would like to encourage more young golfers onto the course giving them the opportunity to learn about handicaps and the rules, experience new courses and clubs, meet new friends and have fun.”

Families are encouraged to walk around and support their players. Each event will also have a putting and chipping competition.

The qualifying events are: Sunday, May 20, Ponteland Golf Club, 2pm; Sunday, June 17, Alnmouth Golf Club, 2pm; Sunday, July 1, Linden Hall Golf Club, 2pm; Sunday, August 12, Hexham Golf Club, 2pm.

The final will be held on Saturday, September 1, at Carus Green Golf Club, Kendal.

Entries will be accepted on a first-come basis.
