This week I’ve fished Thrunton Long Crag a couple of days and they were very different experiences, writes Bob Smith.

The first day it was cloudy but bright enough with a light breeze. The temperature was mild and most anglers were catching trout regularly.

I fished 16 different flies and had 14 takes on my single fly set up. I lost some but managed to get 11 to my net.

Of the 11 trout, nine were tempted with dry fly and the other two took a small nymph pattern.

I used F fly, Nothing fly, Griffith Gnat, three different suspended buzzers, Daddyhog, Sedgehog, and a Deerhair Sedge pattern. The trout wanted anything that floated and they fought very hard.

Two days later I returned and it was different. Mainly, there was a cold breeze from a different direction.

I tried dry flies but attracted nothing, then I tried a Pheasant Tail nymph and hooked a decent trout. It fought hard, jumped and came detached.

Not many rods were catching so I finished my session and had lunch. Over lunch the weather changed, it became a little warmer and anglers began to catch again.

Lots of rods were bent and people were really enjoying their sport.

It just goes to show how fishing can change over quite a short period of time.

Some big bags of trout have been reported at Thrunton this week with not only the bank anglers doing well, but those fishing from their float tubes also experiencing excellent sport.
