However, a busy weekend for junior sport left the team significantly depleted setting the remaining members a tough challenge.

The middle distance races produced the greatest success on the track. Hannah Johnston (U15) ran a strong race winning the 800m in a personal best time and club record of 2min 26s.

Both Ollie Telfer and Lauren Brown were runners-up in their 1500m races and Jack Price managed 3rd place in the U13B’s race.

In the throwing events, Alfie Temple made an outstanding debut performance winning the U13 boys shot put, clearly an event he needs to persevere with.

Talia Thompson had another exceptional day winning the shot put, hammer and javelin.

Leila Thompson won the U13 javelin, breaking her own club record with a fantastic throw of 23.18m. Leila also secured runners-up place in the discus and shot, an excellent set of results. Euan Friend managed a good throw of 8.02m to finish 2nd in the U15B shot put and both he and Ellie Price finished 3rd overall in their discus competitions.

In the U17W javelin, Antje Hall had a good return to form throwing 22.14 to finish 2nd .

In the high jump, both Ollie Telfer (U17) and Joseph Godden jumped 1.55m to finish joint 2nd and Noah Hall was 4th in the U13s.

In the triple jump, Ollie won with 11.11m and Joe was third with 10.53m.

Euan Friend was third U15B in the long jump with 4.37m and Olivia Temple was fourth in the girls’ event.

The 40-strong team represented their clubs and the team admirably and made an excellent attempt to cover all the events across the age groups.

An excellent second place leaves the combined team still the overall league leaders but everything rests on the final fixture in July.

Final points – Tynedale 662, Blyth/Alnwick 650, Blaydon 644, South Shields/Elswick 362, Jarrow/Phoenix F 349, Wallsend/Gosforth 319.
