Alnwick girls qualify for national XC finals

A group of young athletes from Alnwick are preparing for a national final early next month.

The Duchess’s Community High School’s Inter Girls Cross Country team have qualified for the National Finals in Derbyshire on Saturday, December 7.

The team of six, consisting of Millie Breese,Hannah Johnston, Lauren Brown, Beth Carragher, Charlotte Hughes, Poppy Harris -Jones and Katie Knight won the Northumberland round in October beating schools from all over the County including the private Newcastle schools.

On the day the Duchess girls had a second, third and fourth place, putting them in an unbeatable position.

They then competed in the next round, the Regional Finals, in Middlesbrough on November. 9

They ran against the strongest teams from all over the North East and came in third place overall with the top three placings being second, fifth and seventh.

Millie Breese, who is a member of Alnwick Harriers, led the team and came in second in both races.

This gave the team a fantastic overall score of 43 points. Only Harrogate Grammar and St Aidans Harrogate could beat them on the day.

They now represent the school and the North East at the National Finals, which is an outstanding achievement.

The last time the DHS qualified was 2011 when Alnwick hosted the finals in the castle grounds.
