Oliver on form with bat and ball for victory march

Ashington Rugby (121-9) v Alnmouth & Lesbury (122-6)

SG Wealth Management Northumberland Cricket League, Premier Division

Ben Oliver was the star with bat and ball as he helped Alnmouth & Lesbury beat Ashington Rugby by four wickets in the Northumberland Cricket League Premier Division on Saturday.

Oliver took three wickets before top-scoring with 36, as the seasiders maintained their unbeaten start to the league season.

The victory also kept the pressure on the early pacesetters at the summit of the top flight, with third-placed Alnmouth a point behind Warkworth and three behind Blagdon Park.

Ashington Rugby, who were promoted to the Premier Division last season, won the toss and opted to bat.

But this came back to haunt them as their top-order batsmen failed at the crease.

Only Stephen Henderson, coming in at number six, offered any kind of resistance to the Alnmouth bowling attack as he hit a resilient and unbeaten 39 from 126 balls.

Lewis Tanney, with a knock of 10, was the only other Ashington batsman to reach double figures as the newly-promoted side posted a less-than convincing 121-9 off 50 overs.

Their tally could have been lower, but Alnmouth gifted 34 runs of extras.Oliver was the pick of the bunch with the ball, closing with 3-17 from 13 overs – eight of which were maidens.

He was supported by Nicholas Denton (1-15), Johnny Ridley (1-26), Robin Tudor (1-22), Rich Neil (1-18) and Peter Robinson (2-11). Oliver wasn’t finished there though, coming in at number five to hit 36, including a four and two sixes, from 58 balls. His innings came to an end when he was stumped by Kevin Hetherington off the bowling of Scott Maddison.

But he had played his part, departing with Alnmouth needing just three runs to win – which duly came.

Others to contribute to the Alnmouth tally were opening batsman Robinson, with a knock of 19, and Thomas Poole who scored 23, as Alnmouth won with 122-6.

Like Oliver, they were dismissed by Maddison, who was the stand-out bowler for Ashington, taking 5-26 from nine overs. Trevor Elliott (1-23) also picked up a wicket for the defeated side.
