This last week we’ve had some hot weather, and many people have been out casting fly lines. As temperatures have been higher there have been massive hatches of flies.

I was on the River Coquet several times and there have been clouds of insects hatching and flying. Midge, olives, and Daddy Longlegs have been evident. The still waters have experienced excellent hatches of flies too. The larger black Hawthorn flies were evident and anglers have been tempting them quite easily.

Other dry fly patterns such as small CDC patterns have tempted many trout. Klinkhammers patterns floating on the surface have been successful too. Many different techniques, such as washing line and indicator fishing, have caught trout. Even large lures pulled quickly or retrieved in various ways have caught trout too.

Thrunton Long Crag, Sweethope, and Chatton have all produced excellent bags of fish for anglers. Local rivers are running low, so salmon and sea trout anglers are having challenging times. However, trout anglers are still enjoying successful times. The final couple hours of light, especially on the river, increases the likelihood of catching some of the larger specimen brown trout.
