Narrow win for Rothbury men

Rothbury Seniors men’s golfers managed a narrow 4-2 win over a team from the RAF Boulmer Golf Association.

They met at Rothbury Golf Club on Tuesday, July 17, in a Challenge match which has become an annual fixture between the two sides.

John Rear, the current captain for the Rothbury Senior section, was the leader for his 12-man team in the six fourball games, with the RAF side led by Flight Lieutenant James Nickless.

The 4-2 result was a close one, and in his review of the matches during a buffet supper in the clubhouse Mr Rear conceded that his winning team’s local knowledge might have given them a decisive edge.

Last year’s match ended in an honourable draw.

Flight Lieutenant Nickless was undaunted by the overall result, however, as he has a special event to celebrate.

He scored his first ever hole-in-one during his fourball match at the par three 8th hole.

This achievement was rewarded with a fine bottle of wine presented by the club after the match.

Flight Lieutenant Nickless then proceeded to increase his winnings in the evening’s wine draw.

However, he was happy to offer all the players a celebratory hole-in-one drink at his own expense, in traditional golfing fashion.

The air base has strong ties with the town of Rothbury, with the Royal Air Force Asociation Respite Home – which provides convalescence and retirement accommodation for ex-RAF personnel – overlooking the golf club on the edge of the Simonside hills.
