Alnmouth and Lesbury 1sts went down by a narrow nine runs when they entertained Lanchester in the Northumberland and Tyneside Senior League on Saturday.
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat.
They lost an early wicket, and were 0-1, but 79 from opener J Green, which included nine fours, helped them recover and at 217-7 they looked to be on for a big total.
G Brinton also hit 50, and with Kieron Taylor on 39 they went on to post a decent score of 251 all out in 50 overs.
Brian Brooks was the pick of the home bowlers with figures of 3-13, whilst Robin Tudor took 2-76.
In reply, Alnmouth made a more solid start, but lost the first wicket with 27 on the board.
Ian Pearson (42) and Charles Anderson (47) added some mid-innings stability and by the time Anderson was caught they were 232-8 and closing in on their target.
Edward Brunton gave the tail some sway with a good knock of 41 off 40 balls, but when he went to another catch Alnmouth were 242-10 and came up just short.
Two bowlers, Brinton and Taylor, each claimed three wickets for Lanchester.
With 14 games gone in the league, Alnmouth are currently on 144 points and sit ninth in the table, 23 points ahead of the bottom two - Ponteland and Bedlington, who are in the drop zone.
