WINNER: Richard Davies – Swimming

LOCAL sporting stars and volunteers were honoured at the Alnwick and District Sports Council Annual Awards Night.

The prestigious ceremony took place at Alnwick Playhouse on Saturday evening.

Richard Davies was crowned Most Improved sportsperson at the event.

Richard had a memorable 2010.

The 16-year-old from Amble loves swimming and last year, working with mentor Nick Gillingham, he achieved his RAMP (Respect Athlete Mentoring Programme) Certificate. He joined Morpeth Swimming Club and almost immediately became a national standard swimmer. Richard, who attends Morpeth’s Collingwood Special School, became 2010 MENCAP National Champion and, despite breaststroke being his favourite stroke, he won national medals in the front crawl.

The teenager, whose 2010 success earned him a position in the ASA North East Regional Development Squad and Team, said he was pleased to win the award and dreams of competing the Paralympic Games in 2012 and 2016.

Category sponsor: The Village Farm and Townfoot Farm. Short-listed candidates: Jock Bolam (triathlon); Sophie Bronze (athletics); Kate Charlton (equestrian).
