A superb number of Harriers travelled all the way down to Durham on Saturday 21st November to take part in the second of the six-race North East Harrier League cross country series.

Held in cold and muddy conditions, on what many describe as the hardest of the cross country courses, all our runners acquitted themselves well and there were some superb team and individual results.

The 1st race of the day saw the club get off to a flyer as Lauren Brown was victorious in the Girls Under 11s race, whilst there was also another good run by Mille Breese. Max Murray-John finished a brilliant 15th in the Boys Under 11s, whilst his brother Ben was 14th in the Under 13s Boys event. Callie Henderson was 7th from the Fast Pack in the Girls Under 15s and ran the 2nd quickest time in the race. Callie currently sits top of the Girls Under 15s Grand Prix standings after the first two races.

In this race there was also another pleasing performance by the improving Sophie Enser, whilst in the Under 17/20 Womens race it was good to see Rosie Murton back after a spell out injured. Well done to all the Juniors!

For the Seniors the women continue to impress in Division 1. On the day they finished 6th of the 10 teams, but due to their great start at the Tanfield event in September, currently sit fourth in the Division just behind three of the giants of north east running, Durham City Harriers, North Shields Poly and Tyne Bridge Harriers.

Jo Gasgoine-Owens was 1st counter by finishing 14th from the Fast Pack, a great achievement in what was a top class field. In the Veteran Womens Grand Prix Jo is second behind Jo Zakrzewski who represented Scotland in the marathon at last years Commonwealth Games.

Ella Brown, just as she was at Tanfield, was our 2nd counter by finishing 28th also from the Fast Pack. Diana Weightman, who finished out of the counting places at Tanfield, was third after having a very good run by finishing 70th, whilst Pauline Aitchison was fourth and final counter.

Medium Pack runner Karen Kelly was just seconds behind, whilst fellow Medium Packer Tracey Sample also ran well. Well done to Harrier League debutante Lorna Stephenson for taking part in this tough, tough event!

Last year the Senior Men were barely able to field a team for the Durham event, finished bottom in Division 2 on the day and this event was a major reason for their subsequent relegation.

However, a brilliant 18 turned out to race, though two didn’t complete the gruelling course. Despite cycling all the way to Durham Ian Simon was first counter for Alnwick, just outside the top 100 from the Slow Pack. He finished just ahead of new Medium Pack runner Steve Carragher, whilst there was another eye catching performance from Dominic Harris who was just pipped by Steve and had to settle for third counter status. Next to finish were Adam Spiller, Medium Pack runner Phil Hemsley and Fast Pack runner Graham Simpson. Graham, with his Fast Pack penalty was the quickest Harrier on the day. Just behind Graham were Harrier League debut man Dean Stackhouse, Fast Pack man Adam Fletcher and another debutant, Paul Godden.

The great team effort saw Alnwick finish second of the 15 complete teams on the day in Division 3, once again behind Saltwell Harriers.

In the overall standings Saltwell Harriers are top of the pile whilst we are just behind in 2nd.
