Another busy week for Alnwick Harriers

On a busy weekend for the club with the massively subsidised Aviemore Half Marathon and 10k club trip taking place, it was great to see that there were still some Harriers left behind to represent us in the Sherman Cup and Davison Shield cross country races at Temple Park, South Shields on Saturday.

The individual highlight for us was from the sole Junior taking part in the event, Callie Henderson. Callie took part in the Under 15 Girls race and finished an impressive fourth of the 55 runners in 12.15.

Meanwhile five men took part in the Senior Mens race, the first time in many a year that we’ve put a whole team into this event.

With the first three finishers being counters Adam Fletcher, Gary Hall and team captain Micky Aiston they helped us to a respectable 14th of the 29 completed teams, beating some much bigger clubs in the process!

Results: 85-Adam Fletcher 35.14; 145-Gary Hall 37.37; 259-Micky Aiston 40.21, 298-Nick Armstrong 41.44; 456-David Charlton 54.01.

Earlier in the day the club was well represented at a number of Parkruns, with the fastest of the 5k’s being run by Isaac Moss at the Sheffield Hallam Parkrun. Isaac clocked a course best of 17.45 to finish a very good 10th.

Micky Aiston warmed up for his cross country later in the day with a steady 20.47 at the Riverside Parkrun at Chester-le-Street, whilst Andy Squires flew the flag at the Harrogate Parkrun and Gay and Richard Eastoe won the age 60 categories at Workington.

Closer to home at Druridge Bay Junior Harrier Robert Stephenson was first of our contingent in a course pb, whilst Cris Atwell is battling his way back to fitness and also ran a course best to win the male 55 category. Another Junior in Sophie Enser knocked nearly two minutes off her previous best at the course, whilst Lorna Stephenson also ran a 5k pb.

Sheffield Hallam: 10-Isaac Moss 17.45.

Riverside: 13-Micky Aiston 20.47.

Harrogate: 66-Andy Squires 22.40.

Workington: 21-Richard Eastoe 22.54; 31-Gay Eastoe 25.14.

Druridge Bay: 14-Robert Stephenson 22.30; 29-Cris Atwell 23.42; 33-Ian Horsley 24.16; 35-Sophie Enser 24.25; 49-Dave Hindmarsh 26.09; 76-Thomas Davison 30.30; 89-Lorna Stephenson 34.01.

The following day, whilst a large number of Harriers were in action at Aviemore, Mel Steer and Mairi Campbell were representing us in the Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon. Both performed well, with Mel just dipping under the 4 hour mark. Well done to both.

1501-Mel Steer 3.58.42; 2566-Mairi Campbell 4.31.34.

Results for the Aviemore Half Marathon are yet to be found though Ian Simon finished well inside the top 20 and there were huge pbs for Tracey Sample, Dominic Harris and Maureen Bartrum among others.

Also celebrating over the weekend was Ella Brown who won the ladies race at the Alwinton Show Fell Race, whilst many of our Juniors were victorious in the younger categories.

In London Mark Douglas was taking part in the very popular Royal Parks Half Marathon. Mark ran a pb of 1.40.10 and will no doubt hope for a sub 1.40 next time he races the 13.1 mile distance.

Finally, four Harriers took part in the latest of the Run Northumberland races, the Matfen 10k. The highlight was yet more silverware for Gay Eastoe as she won the female 60 category, making the trip from west Cumbria worthwhile.

Results: 121-Gay Eastoe 54.57; 122-Richard Eastoe 54.57; 189-Rachel Bowyer 1.10.33; 190-Christine Smith 1.10.34.
