WITH the weather set fair and the Bamburgh course in fine condition, good scoring was to be expected in the league’s end-of-season President’s Bowl on Sunday.
And the players responded with some excellent golf.
Winner of the Bowl and league individual champion was the host club’s John Moffet snr, with an excellent gross 66, two below the day’s competition scratch score.
Moffet, currently playing off scratch for the first time in more than 40 years, had birdies at five, 14 and 18 and an eagle at the par five fourth where he hit a five-wood second to a foot of the pin.
On the debit side were bogeys at two, where he three-putted, six and 13.
Moffet has returned to his best form this season and earlier shot 65 in a club competition.
“It’s taken me a long time to get down to scratch but I’m proud to have done it,” he said.
Martin Carss (Dunstanburgh) took runners-up honours with a better back six after a four-way tie on 70 along with Bamburgh’s Mark Dawson, Robert Balmbra of Warkworth and Stephen Guy of Magdalene Fields.
There was also a four-way tie on nett 66 for the Advertiser Cup which went to Burgham Park’s Ayrton Cordner on a better back nine from John Moffet, Stephen Guy and Ben Keenan.
Alnmouth (Foxton) won the team event for the Rothbury Trophy (best four gross scores), beating Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh by three shots.
And to cap an excellent competition, John Hogg of Seahouses had a hole-in-one at the tenth.
