Alnwick Ladies I 4 Morpeth Ladies II 1

Alnwick managed to get their final game of 2012 played after the cold weather had forced postponements over the last few weekends.

And what a match it was – a five-goal derby-day clash.

The encounter was fast-paced and there were chances at both ends during the early exchanges. The keepers performed well in the first 20 minutes to keep the score tied at 0-0.

Alnwick grabbed the lead soon after, scoring from a short corner. The ball was passed to Cook who fired a bullet of a shot past the Morpeth defence and into the goal to give the ladies in red a deserved lead.

Alnwick continued to press forward but their opponents held firm and, despite numerous efforts from Britton to work the ball into the goal, Morpeth held out to remain just one goal behind at the break.

The ladies in red stepped up their work rate and it drew dividends almost immediately. A superb driving run from Pettifer took her to the edge of the goal area before a neat pull-back pass found Allen who drag-flicked the ball into the goal to double the lead.

Alnwick continued to press forward and the pressure paid off when Pettifer earned a well-deserved goal as she scooped the ball into the corner to make it 3-0.

Despite the scoreline, Morpeth were never completely out of the game and continued to make some fast breaks in counter-attacking moves.

After successfully defending one short corner, Alnwick conceded another and this time there was no stopping the determined Morpeth forwards who collected the rebound and got the ball over the line to grab a goal back.

Alnwick were to have the last word though. The Morpeth keeper saved a flurry of shots but eventually the ball fell to Broom at the far post who deflected it into the goal to give Alnwick a clear wining margin.

The win meant that Alnwick ended 2012 on a high.
