Heat takes its toll

AlLNWICK Harriers took part in the Run Northumberland Half-Marathon on Sunday, which was held in warm conditions on a challenging course, starting and finishing at Wallington Hall.

David Nolan was the first Harrier to finish, slightly down on his recent Haweswater Half effort, but a good effort given the conditions.

Mel Steer was the first female Harrier to finish, improving on her recent Liversedge time.

Results: 64-David Nolan 1.33.54; 280-Mel Steer 1.53.13; 291-Dave Bartrum 1.54.24; 297-Maureen Bartrum 1.54.57; 341-David Coates 1.58.01; 387-Anne Allan 2.02.54; 493-Gay Eastoe 2.20.42; 494-Richard Eastoe 2.21.06.

Meanwhile, Cris Atwell took part in the North East Marathon Club organised Lakeside Way Marathon at Kielder. Held in very hot conditions, Cris finished 11th of the 30 starters in 4.09.03. The time, though not great by Cris’ standards, was good given the conditions.

The day before, two Harriers took part in the Newcastle Park Run, with Diana Weightman winning the female 45 category in 23.48 in 108th place.

Charlotte Baston warmed up for the Prudhoe NEHL cross-country fixture later in the day with a good performance, finishing in 126th place in 24.36.

Well done to all the Harriers who have taken part in the six North East Harrier League cross-country fixtures this season.

The men’s team’s poor season continued in Saturday’s challenging course at Prudhoe, with only five Harriers turning out due to injury, holidays, other races, etc.

It was a similar story for the ladies team with no Harriers taking part.

Unfortunately, the men’s team’s brief stint in Division One has come to an end as they finished bottom.

The ladies team finished a very encouraging sixth of the 21 teams in Division Two.

Male results: 74-Bruce Crombie (M) 38.52; 96-Adam Spiller (S) 39.20; 113-Mark Miller (S) 39.51; 295-Phil Lee (S) 50.41; 306-Mark Hume (S) 1.01.35
