Harriers’ race aces are flying

Alnwick Harriers

HARRIER David Nolan put in a fine performance in the Newcastle Park Run on Saturday.

He finished the 5k course in 20.08, finishing 32nd of the 225 runners.

The following day, four Harriers took part in the Blyth Sands Handicap Race.

The five-mile course takes competitors along the beach from Blyth to Seaton Sluice and back again and is handicapped by age and sex.

Dave Kirkland had a superb race, running the quickest time by well over three minutes to finish fifth overall, winning the Senior Male category in the process.

Three members of the Skirrow family took part, with Graham winning bragging rights by finishing 48th in 36.28. George was 63rd in 38.56 and Sue 79th in 41.48.

Three Harriers battled the snow, cold and hills of the Allen Valley Striders-organised Hexhamshire Hobble Fell Race.

Andy Squires was the first Harrier to finish the 10.5-mile route in 64th place in 1.29.51. Mike Henry, already crowned as the over 60s North East Fell Runners champion, finished 80th in 1.33.25. Finally, Bridget Peberdy was 149th in 1.49.39.

l Elswick Harriers hosted their annual road race, The Norman Woodcock Memorial Race, on Saturday in bitterly cold and sunny conditions, but a fierce breeze hampered the runners on this three-lap circuit of the ambulance track inside Newcastle racecourse at Gosforth Park.

Elswick’s Phil Hurst and Wallsend’s Yarod Hagos were hot favourites for the main prize as 150 athletes lined up for the five-mile race.

The club was offering a £100 bonus for breaking either the Men’s and Women’s course records.

The two favourites set off at a great pace and at the end of lap one were in sight of the record, but the fierce wind took its toll as the race progressed and at the end of the second lap, Phil had gained an advantage over his Ethiopian opponent.

This lead was gradually reduced but Phil, who ran a great tactical race, was saving a little for the finishing stretch, and eventually triumphed by a margin of eight seconds in 24:23.

First home for Alnwick Harriers was Paul Jones in 33rd place overall in a time of 31m 22s, followed by Jim Lillico in 32:48, third in his age category, and Cris Atwell 35:53.

Full Alnwick results: Paul Jones 31.22, Jim Lillico 32:48, Cris Atwell 35:53, Phil Lee 39:19, Louise Callaghan 39:36, Anne Allan 41:28.
