JUNIOR windsurfing teams battled it out at Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club as part of the RYA North Zone Team15 Inter-Club Championship.
The event, which took place on Sunday, July 24, was round three of the competition, and there was glory for 13-year-old Gustavo Takiguchi, of Amble’s Coquet Crushers, who came first in the 3.5metre category.
This year’s North Zone Championship is tighter than ever, with everything to play for going into the final round of the competition, which takes place in Wakefield in September.
And the team which wins the North Zone title will go on to compete against all the other RYA Zone winners in the National Final; the Team15 Champions Cup.
David Dobson, RYA North Zone Team15 Co-ordinator, was very impressed by the standard of racing on the day.
He said: “The swirling wind made things difficult for the competitors and they had to be very aware of the conditions. It was a great test.”
“Some of the youngsters put in some great performances, especially 13-year-old Gustavo Takiguchi from Morpeth, sailing for the Coquet Crushers, winning six firsts out of nine races in the 3.5m class.
“It was good to see so many North Zone teams represented at round three, stretching from Amble in Northumberland down to Sheffield in South Yorkshire.”
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the RYA Team15 initiative which was set up by the RYA to help make windsurfing more accessible and appealing to youngsters at a grass roots level.
Supported by industry leaders Tushingham/Starboard, Boards magazine and Neil Pryde, fun and informal training sessions take place at T15 clubs all over the country for children up to the age of 15.
Kit can be borrowed from the clubs and the cost of sessions is kept low.
