Northumberland Cricket League Premier Division

With a Herculean effort on Ground of the Year 2011 by groundstaff John Bound, Richard Lillico and whip hand Simon Denton, the match, albeit 30 overs, was again a batting paradise.

Flames, batting first in this Northumberland Cricket League Premier Division fixture, got off to a good start accumulating runs steadily.

Oliver, a man possessed at present, again bowled giving little away and eventually took his first wicket.

The young bespectacled understudy, Nick Denton bowled well at the other end, but it was the introduction of the new boy, Paul Straker, a player of culture and cricketing etiquette, whose spin bowling changed the game.

A dropped catch in the deep proved costly as a pinch-hitter blundered a quick-fire 50, and a good run out and some great catching kept umpires, Gilholm and Lockey, on their toes, as the visitors closed on 156 for 7.

Cometh the hour on come the men; first the two cricketing Galacticos, Pearson and Straker, who, like men of culture at the opera, did it their way.

Straker, hitting some mammoth sixes and some sublime fours, was matched by Ian Pearson, taking the score to nearly 100 before Pearson was out for a good 54.

Straker was joined by Nella Clough who added a steady seven until he chopped one on.

In came Batsman of the Year 2011, who is struggling to keep up with the current run feast of his openers, and he perished early on.

Side-kick Jon Denton missed a straight one, but Straker, holding his side together, and rock-solid Oliver saw the side home for four wickets down and a good 28 points in the bag.

The match was appreciated by the Abramovich of cricket, Blagdon’s Greg Senior who enjoyed, along with his second-team stalwart Foster, a fine game of cricket. Congratulations in this time of Jubilee Celebration to Arnie Gilholm who gots his own recognition from Her Majesty, a telegram!

As the weather torments many sides in the area, not all clubs have the benefit of the groundstaff that Alnmouth are so lucky to have.
