Good start on home soil

Alnwick Ladies 1st XI...3

Roseberry Ladies 1st XI...2

ALNWICK hosted Roseberry for their first home game of the season at a hot and humid Longhirst pitch on Saturday.

The Alnwick girls were fired up and raring to go from the first whistle and immediately had their opponents on the back foot with some great attacking runs from Brown and Oates in midfield.

Roseberry have some experienced, skilful players though and they kept Alnwick on their toes with play moving back and forth until Brown laid off a neat little ball to Cook who drove into the goal area and fired a shot past the keeper (1-0).

Roseberry picked up the pace and pressured the Alnwick defence drawing some excellent tackling from Allen and strong saves from Frew in goal. Their pressure told eventually with the award of a penalty-corner which they sneaked into the goal to draw level (1-1).

The Alnwick girls rose to the challenge. A shot from Graham rebounded off the Roseberry keeper only to find Cook at the edge of the circle and she wasted no time in unleashing a demon shot that flew into the top left corner of the goal (2-1).

The half-time whistle brought a very welcome opportunity to re-hydrate and the Alnwick ladies returned to the pitch determined to keep their lead.

Super-sub Broom kept the opposition keeper busy with some good positional play and Cook continued to dominate the midfield with her tireless running.

Roseberry piled on the pressure but some fierce defensive work from Richardson and cool-under-pressure Horn kept them at bay. Britton had been causing problems for the opposition defence all game and as Alnwick broke forward again she collected the ball and drew the keeper out before sweeping the ball into the goal (3-1).

Roseberry made a fast break after an Alnwick penalty-corner to bring the game back to just a one-goal difference but Alnwick held firm to walk off the pitch with a well-earned win (3-2).
