Golf round-up

Alnmouth, Alnwick, Bamburgh, Belford, Dunstanburgh, Percy Wood, Rothbury, Seahouses and Warkworth all feature.

Alnmouth (V)

Brewery Cup: With the cup being postponed, there was a well-supported nine-hole Stableford competition which ended in a three-way tie for first. David Inkster, Scott Provost and club president, Geoff Lillico all scored 23pts.

Alnmouth vill (S)

Friendly fixture: The friendly fixture versus Morpeth Seniors was played on Thursday, April 4, and proved to be another very close-run affair, with the last set of pairs tieing their battle on the 18th green. It meant that the visitors just scraped home by 3.5 to 2.5. Considering the long, cold, wet winter we’ve had, the course is in remarkably good condition at the moment.

Alnwick Castle

Vaux Trophy 4BBB: In what can only be described as an ever-freshening breeze, for the second week in a row Peter Lewis hit the headlines at Swansfield, this time with his partner Lawrie Stewart in the Vaux Trophy 4BBB competition. Their score of 42pts was a full four points ahead of the chasing pack and was aided by Peter’s eagle three at the stroke one 576-yard 12th hole and by Lawrie’s three chip-ins along the way. In second place, with a very creditable 38pts, bearing in mind that it was three-quarters handicap, were long-time member John Pentleton and the relative newcomer, Ian Hogg. They were two points ahead of Andrew Tate and Bob Shepherd in third spot.

Open Texas Scramble: The first scramble saw local Alnwick Castle big hitters (and obviously great putters too) Dan Harrison, Kevin Smith, Michael Smith and Joe Henderson scoop the first prize with a nett score of 56.3, which included no less than 10 birdies and a somewhat surprising bogie four on the par three 15th. Close behind in second was a team of friends from Alnwick and Newbiggin, Geordie Brown, Ian Tate, John Young and Drew Baxter, who scored 58.7. In third was a mixed four of J and Mrs Herron and D and Mrs K Mavin on 59.8. Unofficially placed fourth with a handicap still to be verified were Alf Currah, Gary Chater, J Howard and M Wilson, who carded 60.0.

The course is now shaping up nicely and, with the warmer weather setting in, it can only improve and is a credit to head greenkeeper Allan Golding and his staff for all their efforts. For members and their guests, there is a mini-quiz and curry night following the Ladies Captain’s Day on Sunday, April 28, full details are on the clubhouse noticeboards.

The Wm Robinson Trophy: Another stableford format was contested by 61 golfers last weekend and once again a great score took the honours. The man who knows his woods, Paul Forester, shot a fine 43pts, with Ian Donkin two shots back on 41. Once the lumberjacks have been in, their 21 and 19 handicaps will be well trimmed. On the podium again was Daz Hindhaugh with a fine 40, which was a gross 73 in real terms. No twos this week, so a roll-over to play for this Saturday. Also the Fairway to Heaven competition has been abandoned due to circumstances beyond the organisers’ control.

Scores: P Forester 43pts; I Donkin 41; D Hindhaugh 40.
