Winter League: As promised, the final week and the results of the overall standings in the Winter League and it couldn’t have been closer. Going into the final day, Wayne Belisle was a very healthy nine points in front of Alan Dodd and Malcolm Peart, but the final day was indeed like cup final day, with Alan blitzing his way into the top slot with a magnificent score of 42 points. Wayne could sadly only manage 32 points and sixth place which meant that Alan was declared the overall winter league winner for the 2012 season. Commenting on his win Alan, who joined Alnwick when he took up golf only 18 months ago, said: “It is a privilege to be a new member in such a friendly and welcoming club.”

Cooper Memorial Trophy: Last Saturday was supposed to be the start of the summer season, but sadly the Les Cooper Memorial Trophy had to be postponed due to the weather. Play did, however, get under way with the Serginson Cup on Sunday. Fresh from their winter league success, Alan Dodd and Michael Smith paired up to take first place ahead of Joe Henderson and Wayne Belisle, John Pentleton and Ray Baston were third on countback.

On Saturday, secretary Dave Arkley dropped his matchball onto the putting surface and watched as it was blown into the Marianas trench. He dropped another with the same result due to the howling easterly gale. Rather than waste another Donnay, he cancelled the Whittle Trophy for the first time in its history. It will be re-scheduled as soon as possible, but this week it is the Warkworth House Cup to play for.

More importantly, at 12.30pm to be precise, 2013 captain Michael ‘Lucky’ Lucas will drive into office after receiving the traditional ‘captain’s vice’ on the first tee. All members, friends and family are invited to offer their support and wish him well for the year ahead. Let’s hope the weather gods feel the same way too.
