ALNWICK U15 14 Tyne Valley U15 31

Sunday, February 6 2011

IN an open and entertaining match played in atrocious conditions, Alnwick went down in a contest that was more closely fought than the scoreline suggests.

Playing their first match since November and starting the match with one player less than the opposition, Alnwick soon conceded an early try scored by Erin Alexander and converted by Lucy Hewitt.

Having achieved parity in numbers, Alnwick began to take control and a series of driving rucks and close support led to county scrum-half Linzi Taylor going over for a try, kicking the conversion herself.

Playing with the slope, Alnwick continued to take the game to Tyne with Sophie Brown crashing over in the corner before adding the extra points.

Alnwick continued to dominate for the rest of the first half but some poor tackling allowed Erin Coney through for an unconverted try for the visitors to leave Alnwick in the lead at half time.

The second half started with both teams evenly matched before Hannah Picknett broke through for a try, Hewitt converting.

Soon after Alnwick lost North of England squad member Jessica Young who had to retire.

Playing up hill and a player short was too much for Alnwick who conceded two quick tries scored by Erin Alexander and Picknett, the first of which was converted by Hewitt.

In a much-improved performance, Alnwick took the game to an experienced Tyne team and would have fared much better if they had managed to keep a full team on the pitch.

They will go into next weekend’s match away to Tynedale with increased confidence.

Alnwick: Amanda Robinson, Jasmin Cockburn, Sophie Brown, Linzi Taylor, Jessica Young, Meg Barnaby, Laura Leadbitter, Lucy Smibert.
