Fun way to learn new skills

FUN new sessions to encourage women to play netball start in Alnwick next month, as part of a nationwide initiative.

The town’s Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre will host Back to Netball classes every Wednesday, starting on September 21.

The sessions are part of an England Netball scheme which is being rolled out throughout the country, providing a gentle introduction to the sport for female players aged 16 years and over.

The classes will be coach-led and cover basic skill development and court play and the emphasis will be on learning new skills and having fun playing the sport with friends.

Back to Netball caters for all abilities and is aimed at players getting fit, having fun and making friends through the sport.

Ashley Concannon, women, girls and 50+ officer for Alnwick Sports Development, said: “It is a great opportunity for all abilities to get back into this exciting game.

“The sessions will be fun with a friendly atmosphere and it will be really relaxed and anyone is welcome to come.”

The classes at Willowburn will run from 6pm to 7pm, costing £3 per person per session.

As well as the Back to Netball classes, Willowburn will also hold an Alnwick Juniors’ Netball Club and a Ladies’ Netball Club, which will also take place every Wednesday and start on September 21.

The Junior Club will run from 5pm to 6pm and cost £20 per person for 10 sessions. It is aimed at girls aged 12 to 16 and classes must be booked in advance.

The ladies’ club, for those 16 and over, will take place from 7pm to 8pm, and will focus on skill development and competition.
