Longhoughton Rangers kicked off their season with a fine win at the weekend as their busy pre-season schedule paid great dividends.

Rangers found themselves a goal up within two minutes as new striker Sam Wright fired home with a powerful shot. They doubled their lead midway through the first half when Wright again made no mistake in firing home.

In the second half, goalkeeper Slack who had a faultless first half, was injured following a fearless dive at the Blyth striker’s feet and replaced by Jake Allan.

Blyth pushed hard and converted from a corner, but Rangers then took advantage with an impromptu team talk as the referee removed a frog which had hopped onto the pitch.

This had the desired effect as Wright again made no mistake and completed his hat-trick.

Blyth were not ready to give up, though, and Rangers’ inability to defend a corner for the second time saw the score at 3-2.

Longhoughton’s fitness began to tell, and a Turnbull effort smacked off the bar and was dispatched by the impressive Wright for his fourth, before a great individual goal from Tait and further goals from Wright, McEwan, and Turnbull.

All in all a pleasing result gained by clinical finishing, fitness, and great team spirit.
