Welfare blast seven to stay top

Red Row Welfare...7 Alnmouth...0

RED Row remained top of the table on goal difference with a good win over Alnmouth on Saturday.

The first 10 minutes of the game was dominated by the wind with both teams trying to adapt to the testing conditions but Red Row took the lead when a Robert Baker corner evaded everyone and curled into the net.

A few minutes later, a Sean Palmer pass found Kevin Bell, who doubled Red Row’s advantage with a delightful chip over the advancing Alnmouth goalkeeper.

The unwell Sean Palmer was then replaced by Karl Taylor on the half-hour mark and Taylor made an immediate impact, heading home powerfully from a pinpoint Jaden Gray cross.

Red Row made it 4-0 before half-time when Bell broke down the right-wing and crossed for Darren Smith, who hammered home expertly from the edge of the box.

The second-half started quietly with both teams struggling to play football in the wind that was getting stronger by the minute, but Red Row drew inspiration from Smith, whose powerful effort could only be parried by the Alnmouth keeper into the path of the impressive Karl Taylor, who doubled his tally to make it 5-0.

Smith was again involved in the sixth goal, curling in a fine cross that was met on the line by John Charton.

In the dying moments of the game, Smith grabbed his second of the game and Red Row’s seventh, cutting inside from Marc Nixon’s short corner and curling it perfectly into the top corner to round off a good display from the league leaders.
