Welfare blast magnificent seven

DIVISION ONE

Stobswood Welfare...7

Morpeth Sporting Club...0

STOBSWOOD played host to Morpeth Sporting Club on Saturday.

The visitors started brighter and for the first 10 minutes were outplaying their hosts without causing Mavin in the home goal any problems.

Slowly Welfare began to get a foothold in the game and they took the lead on 15 minutes when a good move down the left saw the ball fed into Shanks who played it into the path of Chris Glass who blasted in from close range.

Stobswood were then awarded a penalty when Shanks was brought down in the box.

However, the resulting spot-kick was missed.

By then, Welfare were in total domination, creating chances at will so it was no surprise when Davy King drove home a second following a scramble in the visitors’ box.

Just on half-time, Adam Shanks gave the scoreline some justice when he calmly slotted home after some good work between Smith and Davison set him free.

Half-time 3-0.

The second half started the same way as the first had ended with Wood in total control but to their credit the visitors’ heads never went down and they kept working hard.

It was not until the middle of the second half that Wood extended their lead when again Shanks found himself free to notch number four.

Stobswood were then able to bring on Paul Nisbet, back after work commitments which have restricted him playing, and give debuts to Kevin Bell and Dan Palmer.

The best goal of the game came in the seventh minute following good work between Baker and Graham down the left. Shanks received the ball some 20 five yards out and let fly an unstoppable drive to notch his hat-trick.

More good work between Nisbet and Graham freed Bell to score on his debut.

The scoring was complete when a Graham pass split the home defence and again Shanks made no mistake.

This was a fine performance and one that Stobswood must build on if they are to climb the table.

Special mention must be made of Ricki Hume’s performance whose passing and distribution from the back was superb.
