Bamburgh Castle 3 Shilbottle CW Res 0

Sportsworld North Northumberland League, Division Two

Shilbottle Reserves were facing the league leaders for the second week in succession and fell to defeat by exactly the same score in this match at Castle Green, Bamburgh.

The Colliers, bolstered by several first-team players, were soon under pressure, Andrew Wilson saving well after Chris Dalton’s flicked header found Gaz MaCann in space.

The home side had started brightly and Dalton had the ball in the net on five minutes although he was deemed offside.

Bamburgh took the lead a minute later when Sam Aldred’s pinpoint cross was met by McCann who made no mistake.

On 30 minutes, a Danny Johnson free-kick was collected by brother Johnny just inside the box.

He turned smartly and fired home under the Shilbottle keeper, although the keeper may have done better with the effort.

Injuries forced Bamburgh to make two changes before half-time, and the closest Shilbottle came to a response was when John Mowbray broke clear just before the interval.

But with only the goalkeeper to beat he shot wide of the target.

Bamburgh led by two goals at the break and within five minutes of the restart had increased their advantage to three.

Both teams continued to play some neat football on the excellent surface and it was Chris Dalton on the hour who effectively sealed victory, timing his run perfectly to beat the offside trap after being fed by a defence-splitting Danny Johnson through-ball.

Although Shilbottle never looked like retrieving the situation, they did improve during the last half-hour.

The Colliers piled on the pressure in the closing stages and they were unfortunate not to score when Chris Chisholm had a strong header blocked on the line and a powerful drive by Phil Grey was fumbled by the Bamburgh keeper by he recovered to save on the line.

Despite this late pressure Bamburgh were able to hold tight for a comfortable victory, recording another clean sheet and an excellent team performance.

NFA Minor Cup, Round Three

Due to the wintry weather only two games involving North Northumberland League teams managed to go ahead.

The results meant it was not a good day for the Tweedmouth sides as Harrow went down to a heavy 9-0 defeat at Newcastle Medicals. Rangers also lost out 4-2 away at Fawdon Park United.

The remaining four ties will now hopefully take place this Saturday.
