Alnwick Town are still searching for their first win since the start of September after falling to a 1-0 defeat against North Shields on Saturday.

A goal from Andy Hay just after the half-hour was the difference between the sides, condemning bottom-of-the-table Alnwick to their 10th league loss of the season.

After the game, the Shields chairman admitted Alnwick should have salvaged something from the Northern League Division Two encounter, but once again the St James’ Park side were unable to make their chances count.

The black ’n’ whites went into the game on the back of last week’s 1-1 draw with Horden CW.

Alnwick started well and had the first chance when Kieran Hogg’s shot just missed the target.

At the other end, Shields went close to breaking the deadlock thanks to Adam Forster’s header but Alnwick keeper Brian Brooks pushed the ball over.

The first and only goal of the game came in the 32nd minute; Hay’s edge-of-the-area cross-shot going in off the post.

Alnwick responded straightaway and went close through Tony Brown, whose deft shot went just wide with home keeper Sean McCafferty stranded.

With five minutes of the first half remaining, Brooks superbly denied Shields’ Keith Douglas, once again pushing the ball over the bar.

While Shields had the edge in the opening 45 minutes, Alnwick were the better side in the game’s second period.

Just after the hour, the ball broke out of defence to Fremlin who saw his shot on the edge of the area palmed behind by McCafferty. Shortly after, Fremlin went close again, but his first-time half-volley went over.

Despite Alnwick’s dominance, Shields nearly extended their lead in the 83rd minute, but for Tom McPherson’s goalline clearance.

Alnwick were unable to grab a share of the spoils. They remain at the foot of the table, six points behind second-bottom Stokesley Sports Club.

Team: Brooks, Lowes, Catlow, Elliott, McPherson, Murray (C), Moffat, Brown, Thompson (Fremlin), Vickers, Hogg (Jackson). Sub Makin, Kennedy (on for Jackson).
