United win coastal clash

A STORMING second-half show from Alnmouth, when they netted five times, resulted in a heavy and rather harsh scoreline for Craster in this typically lively local derby.

An even opening half started well for the home side as they carried the game to the visitors, laying siege early on with Mark Oman threatening the target on a couple of occasions.

As they steadied themselves, however, it was Rovers who created an even better opening when after being sent clear by Lee Charlton, Jordan Frost was denied by a superb Russell Stalker save with Charlton skewing the loose ball wide of the gaping goal.

Chief tormentor for United, Sean Anderson nearly punished the miss when Stephen Carey played him through only for Craster keeper Duncan Browell to get a vital touch.

The lead was eventually gained on 35 minutes following Anderson’s threaded pass for Ryan Taylor to lob the advancing Browell.

The advantage was doubled 10 minutes after the interval following a swift one-touch move. Paul Smith fed Taylor, who returned the favour for Anderson before the latter chipped the advancing Browell.

The points were effectively wrapped up on the hour when an Oman flag-kick was controlled on Darren Smith’s chest before he turned and rifled home into the bottom corner.

The same combination registered Alnmouth’s fourth 10 minutes later with Smith this time finding space at the back post to head home another Oman corner.

Jonathan Clarke went close for Rovers but his header cleared the bar and by this time Karl Taylor had added his side’s fifth with a looping effort into the top corner from wide left.

The scorer then turned provider for the final goal six minutes from time as his free-kick was deftly glanced home by John Wilkie.
