Highfields United 1 Red Row Welfare 3 – Anderson Cup Quarter-final

The hosts dominated the early going on Saturday, with the wind at their backs and Red Row slow out of the gates, going close on a few occasions and rattling the bar.

As Red Row struggled to gain a foothold in the game and kept making mistakes, their sloppiness was deservedly punished when Highfields’ Simon Hargreaves fired a rocket of a free-kick past John Charlton.

Red Row regrouped and clawed their way back into the game before half-time when the impressive Max Anderson’s shot hit the post, with Kevin Bell making no mistake with the rebound in a move which began with a defence-splitting pass from veteran Ronnie Warwick.

This rejuvenated the visitors for the second half and they then started to play some decent football with wingers Anderson and Black always a threat, and it was the latter who put Red Row ahead, nodding home at the back post after getting on the end of an inch-perfect Ben Lilburn cross.

Calvin Flanighan was brought on for his Red Row debut and he injected some energy to the side with his constant running at the defence and tricky feet. There was also the return of ex-manager David Whenray, coming off the bench after a lengthy injury lay off.

Darren Smith put the game to bed and settled any nerves by tapping in from inside the six-yard box.

Red Row pushed on for more goals and Smith had two efforts cleared off the line before Whenray’s vicious goal-bound shot was blocked by some brave Highfields defending.

Squad: J Charlton, L Eason, R Warwick, D Palmer, B Lilburn, S Black, S Palmer, D Shepherd, M Anderson, K Bell, D Smith, C Flanighan, D Whenray. Red Row Welfare man-of-the-match: Shaun Black.

Red Row are appealing for sponsors and have a variety of options available for willing parties.
