Horden CW...1 Alnwick Town...2
STL Northern League, Division Two
ALNWICK Town boss Paul Yeadon praised the character of his threadbare side after a 2-1 victory at Horden CW on Tuesday night, making it two wins in four days for the Northumbrians.
The St James’ Park outfit were missing a string of first teamers for the County Durham trip.
But a patched-together Town, fielding a host of youngsters, showed true grit to take all three points against lowly Horden.
Ironically though, for all the youth in the ranks, it was the old guard who helped seal the victory, with long-serving senior players Gary Patterson and Bryan Murray scoring for Town.
For Patterson, it was his second goal in two games, while Murray’s effort marked a welcome return to action for the club skipper who has been absent recently through suspension.
Their first-half efforts cancelled out Horden’s opener – a penalty after two minutes.
It was a fine triumph for Town, in a game played in extremely difficult conditions, with a strong swirling wind, sleet and rain.
Yeadon said: “I am really, really pleased with the team. There were a lot of youngsters in there and they did well.
“Brad McLellend came in and was phenomenal, while Gary Patterson and Bryan Murray did well in midfield.
“The character, commitment and dedication from the lads was unbelievable.”
The victory was the latest sign of Town’s resurgence under new boss Yeadon, who took over in February.
And with the club in a rich vein of form, with a run of results which has lifted them to 13th in Division Two, Yeadon is looking for his Town troops to push on to finish the campaign on a high.
“I am looking for a mid-table finish,” he admitted.
“The lads are working hard for each other, they are enjoying their football and they are playing without pressure and are feeling comfortable.”
